Earthquake has occurred in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara with magnitude 6.4 SR in Sunday, July 29, 2018 around 05.47 AM (local time). This magnitude is centered in the northwest of East Lombok regency with a depth of 10 kilometers.
A series of moderate & strong earthquakes on July 29, August 5 & August 19, 2018, with magnitudes of 6.4, 7.0 and 6.2 on RS respectively, rocked cities and regencies in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara. These earthquakes were followed by more than a hundred aftershocks, as reported by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Earthquakes occurred again on March 17, 2019, with a magnitude of 5.4 and 5.1. The epicenter was at East Lombok and was felt at scale IV in North Lombok and East Lombok. These earthquakes damaged houses, with 499 houses moderately damaged and 28 badly damaged, and also 3 people were killed and 62 injured. Due to the last earthquake, it is estimated that hundreds of people are affected.
In the month of May, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 3,0 RS on May 22, 2019. The epicenter was in North Lombok and was felt at scale II in North Lombok area. In general, the situation is safer compared to last month.
Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) has been conducted Lombok earthquake emergency response in the area since Monday, July 31, 2018. WVI started to respond to the basic needs of people since early of August 2018. Ten months on, the organization has catered to the life-saving needs of affected communities in the districts of East Lombok and North Lombok.
Collaborated with donors, partners, and sponsors, until June 2019, WVI has provided 39 Child-Friendly Spaces in North Lombok District and East Lombok District. WVI has also distributed 5,734 family kits, 1,219 children kits, 1,472 school kits, 809 family hygiene kits, and 456 children hygiene kits to the communities. WVI has also built more than 1,200 toilets with more than 550 water tanks and 11 temporary learning spaces in both of assisted areas, with total 137,780 people including 34,445 families as beneficiaries.
WVI by Lombok Earthquake Emergency Response (LEER) team targets to increase the help for people especially children in Lombok until April 2020. LEER will provide disaster risk reduction for children at school by running Safe School project and also establish Children Playing Centre with PAUD (Early Childhood Care and Development) building in North Lombok District. Besides that, Wahana Visi Indonesia will also plan to build sanitation facilities such as toilets, washing stand, waste bins for organic and inorganic wastes. We also conduct to provide temporary building to support permanent house which will be held by government to affected people in Lombok.
