On Saturday, 15 August 2026, at 04:58:23 WIB, the region of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, was struck by a tectonic earthquake. Updated analysis from BMKG indicates that the earthquake had a revised magnitude of M7.7 at a depth of 15 km. The epicentre was located at sea, 30 km north-east of Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara. Tsunami modelling shows that this earthquake HAS THE POTENTIAL TO TRIGGER A TSUNAMI in the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara.
Six programme areas supported by Wahana Visi Indonesia have felt the impact of the earthquake in Flores. The operational offices most severely affected are in Ende, Bajawa and Nagekeo. Wahana Visi Indonesia will implement an emergency response to help address the urgent needs of children and families across Flores.
More than 40,000 people have been displaced following the earthquake in Flores. In addition to approximately 5,000 homes being severely damaged, education and health facilities have also been affected.
At present, children and families in Flores urgently need:
1. Emergency shelter and tents
2. Clean water
3. Food
4. Psychosocial support
The Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) emergency response team, working across six regencies in Flores, is responding to these needs and will implement the emergency response over a three-month period.
Children and families in Flores need support that is not only swift, but also appropriate and targeted to their needs.
Our WVI response team will focus on delivering non-food supplies, clean drinking water, and providing rapid psychosocial support to affected children.
