On Saturday, 15 August 2026, at 04:58:23 WIB, the region of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, was struck by a tectonic earthquake. Updated analysis from BMKG indicates that the earthquake had a revised magnitude of M7.7 at a depth of 15 km. The epicentre was located at sea, 30 km north-east of Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara. Tsunami modelling shows that this earthquake HAS THE POTENTIAL TO TRIGGER A TSUNAMI in the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara.
Six of Wahana Visi Indonesia's supported areas were hit by the earthquake, with our Ende, Bajawa, and Nagekeo operational offices affected most severely. Wahana Visi Indonesia is initiating a disaster response to bridge key aid gaps for children and families in Flores.
Our team is confirming the safety of all Wahana Visi Indonesia staff and their families in the area, alongside conducting rapid assessments in six affected regencies to pinpoint critical needs. We are partnering closely with local authorities and community groups to deliver emergency aid to those who need it most, without delay.
WAHANA VISI INDONESIA TAKES SWIFT ACTION FOR FLORES' CHILDREN
As of 15 August 2026, tent packages for affected families were distributed across Flores by WVI's emergency response team. En route to the affected villages, the team saw families sheltering in improvised tents. Local authorities are also setting up displacement camps. Everyone is stepping up to help children and families in Flores cope with the aftermath of the quake.
Our WVI response team will focus on delivering non-food supplies, clean drinking water, and providing rapid psychosocial support to affected children.
