Caring to Bring Meaning

Ubahani is a posyandu cadre in Sintang District. Her love of public health made her aware of the progress and development of the villagers' health. That is why she has dedicated herself as a cadre for 18 years.

During the years, Ubahani also understood that there is a health issue in the village. She found the fact that people often drink raw water. This happens because of the difficulty of getting access to clean water in the village. The wells that have been made by villagers are also not enough to be used by all villagers. Not to mention the existence of gold mining without a permit (PETI) which makes river water polluted and bad for consumption.

“I am sad to see the conditions. We can not ban PETI workers because they earn money by doing it. But also, if they keep working, our environment will get worst,” said Hani, her nickname.

Hani is one of the cadres who is working with the Air Project of Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI), funded by P&G, to provide education to the community on how to treat water properly. Like other extension workers, Hani is grateful to be involved in this program and sees the enthusiasm of the villagers. She is glad to know that the program is appropriate for her village.

“I saw that people responded very well and the community also welcomed this activity positively, we could see earlier how enthusiastic the community was to come to the counseling. Honestly, I saw it so excited to deliver this material. I am not a smart person but I want to share knowledge with the community about the importance of treating water properly,” she explained.

Hani hopes for a change in the behavior of the villagers. Even though she can only do some small things, she hopes that the villagers can feel the benefits.

"I also hope that through this program, all of us, the Mensip Jaya community, can change wrong behavior, especially in terms of providing safe water for families," she concluded.
