The life skills training activities facilitated by Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) in Landak Regency have become a safe learning space for children to understand themselves and their surroundings. This initiative is designed to equip children with essential life skills through nine sessions covering 28 important topics. One child who has experienced the impacts of this programme is Yulia (14), an active participant who has shown a marked shift in her mindset and attitude since joining the classes.
Before these activities were introduced, most children in WVI’s assisted villages gained their primary knowledge from school and their immediate environment. However, many crucial aspects of a child's life were rarely discussed openly, such as:
Physical changes during puberty.
How to maintain reproductive health and hygiene.
Recognising the risks of violence.
The mindful use of social media.
Due to this limited information, many children were not fully prepared to face the challenges of their own development. Yulia, for instance, was initially a quiet girl who felt shy when discussing topics related to the body and self-identity. She did not yet realise that puberty is a natural phase requiring specific knowledge and the right attitude to ensure personal safety and well-being.
The life skills classes are delivered gradually using a child-friendly and interactive approach. The curriculum is designed to complement school learning with highly relevant material, delivered through simple language, group discussions, and activities that encourage active participation.
These lessons have proven to be a turning point for many, helping children understand the importance of self-protection from an early age.
"The new things I’ve learned from this activity include how to clean male and female reproductive organs. I’ve also learnt how to be wise on social media and recognise the risks of violence. From all of this, I have realised that looking after oneself during puberty is very important," Yulia shared.
As the classes progressed, Yulia underwent a significant transformation. She became more active in the sessions, gained the confidence to voice her opinions, and was able to reflect on the new concepts she had mastered. The knowledge she gained did not stay confined to the classroom; it began to shape her awareness and actions in her daily life.
The WVI operational office in Landak Regency, alongside mentors from the Village Children’s Forum, continues to provide ongoing support. The hope is that these activities will further strengthen children's understanding and foster the positive attitudes and behaviours necessary to support their healthy development.
