New Home and New Feet for Nurme

New Home and New Feet for Nurme

#LombokBangkitKembali - Getak Gali is one of subdistricts in North Lombok that affected by the Lombok earthquake a year ago. Most of the houses of people were destroyed, and nearly 90% of residents' houses were heavily damaged. According to the condition, people had to live in Berugak (gazebo in the local language). They also made a temporary place using tents and tarpaulin to cover themselves from the sun and the rain.

Based on the people’s condition, Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) supported by Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH) builds a temporary shelter for people in Getak Gali Subdistrict at Sokong Village. About 26 shelters were built for them.

Nurme (64 yo) is a beneficiary of the shelter assistance. He is a person with disabilities with an amputated right leg. An accident in 2005 caused him to have lost his leg.

“Fourteen years ago, I was in an accident, hit by a big bus, so my legs were crushed. I was lacking in blood first until the doctor gave me the choice of saving my life or legs. Then I chose my leg to be amputated," Nurme recalled.

For now, Nurme is using prosthetic limbs. Despite the current situation, the man who works as a motorcycle taxi driver is never desperate to make a living to support two grandchildren who live with him.

Seeing Nurme's condition in need of prosthetic limbs, WVI advocated the Christian Foundation for Public Health (YAKKUM) to assist with the provision of prosthetic limbs. Right at the beginning of November 2019, YAKKUM took Nurme to Yogyakarta for further examination of his leg condition.

"I have been helped a lot by this WVI, the house is also helped by WVI, then I can get prosthetic limbs. I can't say anything else but thank you. May God repay WVI's kindness with all its graces," said him with tears in his eyes.

Until now, WVI has built 213 temporary shelter units spread across eight sub-villages in Sokong Village. This development will continue until December 2019.
