Alwin (9), a Year 4 primary school student in a village in Southwest Sumba, lives a very simple daily life. Besides going to school, he spends much of his time helping his father in the fields. Alwin assists with planting maize and other crops to support his family’s needs.

Currently, Alwin’s village is assisted by Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI). Since WVI’s presence, many new learning opportunities have become part of his daily life. He is an active sponsored child who regularly takes part in activities facilitated by WVI.

Not only Alwin, but his father is also involved in a farmer group supported by WVI. Through this group, the family received a female goat as initial support. According to the group’s agreement, the goat must be well cared for so it can become a source of income for the family.

This activity has not only helped drive the family’s economy but has also nurtured a strong sense of responsibility in Alwin. In addition to school and working in the fields, he now has another daily task—collecting grass to feed the goat. He also helps care for and look after it attentively to keep it healthy. Despite his young age, Alwin carries out his responsibilities with diligence and enthusiasm.

Alwin and his family’s efforts have paid off. Their goat has reproduced and given birth to a kid. This success has brought great joy to them. They are grateful and have realised that this support is not just temporary—it is a reminder that hope always exists.

Through WVI’s support and presence, Alwin is growing not only as a diligent child at school and at home, but also as a child with strong motivation and hope for the future.
