Training for Village Volunteers

Training for Village Volunteers

After several months ago activating the Village Disaster Preparedness Team (VDPT) in Sembalun District, East Lombok Regency, Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) has again provided various training to the community. WVI has provided first aid training and disaster risk reduction simulations to VDPT members.

Not only training and simulating, but VDPT members were also invited to participate in making various evacuation signs in places prone to disasters. Various signs such as evacuation routes, gathering points, signs of prone to landslides, volcanoes are some of the work done by this team.

Sulniati (36), Team Leader of VDPT Sajang felt that this training was a reminder of knowledge for all members.

"Alhamdullilah, we are grateful and helped by the training and mentoring. We have not been assisted both by the government and other NGOs for a long time, especially for having first aid training, from starting to treat accident victims, fractures, and others. And (we) hope that all VDPT members who have been recruited with the given capacity can strengthen the team in the event of a disaster," Sulniati explained.

WVI collaborated with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) which was attended by the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in conducting this training. Ahyanto, one of the partners from PMI who facilitated this training said that this training was very important for village volunteers.

"Initially we joined WVI because there was information that there would be a first aid training activity in Sembalun for village volunteers and we agreed to participate in WVI activities because in our opinion this training is very important because the content is mandatory for village knowledge for village volunteers. The hope is that this program can help friends from volunteers to independently reduce disaster risk and be able to provide first aid before the community or victims are given better service," said Anto.

WVI, with the support of UNDP PETRA, continues to assist TSBD in Sembalun District. Three villages such as Sajang Village, Sembalun Bumbung Village, and Sembalun Lawang Village are the villages that receive assistance from this activity targeting village volunteers or TSBD.
