WVI Teaches This to Solve Polluted Clean Water Source Problem
Getting clean water is a privilege for some people in Indonesia. The reason is, not all Indonesian people have the opportunity to enjoy clean water due to environmental damage or pollution. One of them occurred in the WVI service area in the Area Program (AP) of Melawi Sintang.
Priskila (39), known as Kila, a posyandu cadre in the WVI AP Melawi Sintang service area said the land which was dominated by oil palm plantations, made it difficult for people to get clean water. People often use gallons of water and even water from Kapuas rivers to meet their daily needs such as drinking, even though the river is also used for open defecation, washing, etc.
"There is no other choice but to take river water for daily needs, especially when the water rises and causes flooding, it is increasingly difficult for us to get clean water here," said Kila.
This reality moved WVI through the AIR project funded by P&G to educate the public regarding drinking water treatment for households. Kila became one of the cadres who had the opportunity to share the knowledge she had acquired with the community.
Kila explained to the community how the water taken from the Kapuas river can also be consumed in the right way. The use of water purification powder is one solution to this problem.
"This is important to understand, especially for the health of the people in the village so that they can provide proper drinking water for the family," said the woman who also works as a rubber tree tapper.
However, Kila feels that the struggle to create a clean and healthy village still has a long way to go. The practice of open defecation, and not all villagers having toilets, is still the next challenge. Kila hopes that WVI's assistance can help her village become better and the community can live a healthier life.
“Thank you for every concern and assistance to our village. We believe that every change that occurs requires the process and cooperation of everyone, so for that, please never stop to accompany our village until it becomes a clean and healthy village," she concluded.
