1. Study Background
Indonesia cocoa production declined significantly in the last decade from ~500,000 MT to less than ~180,000 MT today. Cocoa beans production has dropped by more than half over a decade in the country, facing competing crops and aging plantations. Indonesia used to be the 3rd world producer of Cocoa, after Ivory Coast and Ghana. It is now no. 7 globally, still No. 1 in Asia, with main cocoa producing region is Sulawesi (~65% of Indonesia total cocoa production).
The government started a program to subsidize fertilizer and planting material to support cocoa farmers. Cocoa is not the main commodities focus compared to palm oil, coffee and food crop and has been facing a challenge with growing of food crop farm expansion as result of Government Food Security program and non-competitiveness. This pilot study is carried out to assess some new areas that could be potential to develop the cocoa agroforestry program and to improve livelihood aspect of the local communities through sustainable cocoa agroforestry production. This program could be a new sustainable investment opportunity that will benefit local communities and keep conserving their environment sustainably. Practical recommendations and some project strategic plans would be provided based on this pilot study results.
