Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI), which received the Derap Kerjasama Jakarta Award in the field of education from the Jakarta administration this year, is again holding the SGI Dream Class program which aims to improve the quality of education by focusing on supporting digital devices in schools. In collaboration with Seoul Guarantee Insurance (SGI), this program is being held for the third time, benefiting a total of 3,680 students since 2022.
In its third year, the SGI Dream Class program is being implemented in the North Jakarta area, which is a densely populated area with high socio-economic vulnerability. The stages of this program have been carried out since June and initiated by conducting initial assessments in several schools that were recommended by educational units at the sub-district level, which was then followed by a handover to the assisted schools.
“We greatly appreciate SGI’s commitment to supporting us in our efforts to realize a full life for children in the field of education. We also have the same appreciation for the support of the government and schools as participants, from teachers and students, who are also obliged to care for and maintain the digital devices that have been given. Hopefully, these digital devices will bring long-term benefits,” said Johny Noya, WVI zonal program manager.
This program involves the administration at the sub-district education unit head level, who also recommends schools that need digital device support. The schools that participate have an obligation to maintain and care for the digital devices that have been provided by SGI. Students in this program also carry out the tasks and responsibilities by making maximum use of the assistance that has been provided.
SGI Dream Class is aimed as a follow-up to address the problem of technology implementation in education in Indonesia, which is still lagging behind. This is due to a lack of access to information and communication technology (ICT) and the technological capabilities of students and teachers. The 2022 Technology-Driven Education Survey in Indonesia which analyzed Indonesia's technological readiness among other countries showed that only 16 percent of schools in Indonesia have access to computers.
This figure is the lowest in Southeast Asia. The survey also showed that only 18 percent of households/families have personal computers. The results of this survey show that many students in Indonesia still do not have adequate resources in ICT infrastructure at home or school, thus hampering their capacity to master digital literacy.
“We are grateful that Wahana Visi Indonesia and SGI are here to support the children in North Jakarta who will become our hope, these children will become a productive generation in 2045. The digital devices provided will be very useful in the development of science and technology in schools. This is one of the goals and visions of the Education Agency in realizing complete quality education without looking at private or public schools,” Sujaelani, head of the education unit in North Jakarta said.
“SGI will continue to be committed to the world of education in Indonesia. SGI Dream Class Batch 3 is a form of real commitment made to take part in the development of the world of education and equip the future generation of Indonesia in the world of education,” said Sanghoon Oh, chief officer of the SGI Jakarta Representative Office.
Farel, one of the participating students, agreed. “As students, we will develop digital marketing and life skills that have been provided by WVI previously and will deepen our accounting knowledge in our vocational school department. My friends and I would like to thank Wahana Visi Indonesia and SGI for providing one of the facilities that we really need,” he said.
Ahmad, one of the participating elementary school teachers concurred. “It is not enough to just use printed books. This program improves children's knowledge. Learning new things in class can be done using a laptop, for example learning through video media, children will find it easier to understand the lessons given.”
