Clean Water Network for WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services and implementing inclusive and sustainable hygiene practices.

South Central Timor is a largely rural district with limited access to clean water. Many households rely on distant springs, seasonal rainfall, or unimproved water sources, especially during the dry season. Sanitation coverage is low, and open defecation remains common, contributing to environmental pollution. Limited infrastructure and challenging geographic conditions hinder reliable water supplies and the construction of latrines.

Inadequate hygiene practices, such as lack of handwashing and prioritizing drinking water over hygiene, exacerbate health risks. Poor WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) conditions are strongly associated with frequent diarrheal diseases and high rates of stunting in children. Women and children are disproportionately affected, spending significant time fetching water and bearing the burden of hygiene-related problems.

For children in South Central Timor to live in a healthy and protected environment, children and communities need to have better access to inclusive and sustainable WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) services and practices.

Water Shortages in South Central Timor Exacerbate Health Risks

  • People in Pene Utara Village typically spend about 30 minutes or travel more than 500 meters from their homes to reach a water source. When purchasing water, it costs around IDR 10,000 for four 20-liter jerrycans during the rainy season. However, during the dry season, the same amount is only enough for two jerrycans. The rainy season only occurs from November to April each year. The remaining six months are dry.
