Children’s Voice for Disaster Preparedness

Children’s Voice for Disaster Preparedness

Amer, Indah, and Galvin, assisted children of Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) discussed the participation of children and youth in the Child and Youth Action session on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change through Digital Campaign, Citizen Voice and Action, and Waste Management – as part of the 2022 GPDRR. The three of them had the opportunity to share their experiences in disaster risk reduction actions at the Indonesian Resilience House, Nusa Dua, Bali.

Amer, a child assisted by WVI in the SINERGI project, shared her concern when she saw that the children in her environment used flooding as a playground. She also took the initiative to create a series of programs to increase public awareness regarding disaster risk. One of them is by holding a webinar on “Preparing Yourself and Children for Disaster Preparedness” in collaboration with BPBD DKI Jakarta.

“In this webinar, we target parents, especially mothers because mothers have an important role in disaster preparedness efforts, namely to look after their children when a disaster occurs by telling them not to play during a flood. In addition, mothers play a role in providing a sense of comfort when children panic and prepare basic needs in disaster emergencies," explained Amertia.

All three emphasize the involvement of children and youth in Disaster Risk Reduction and the environment because it can provide a wider perspective and also the energy of young people that can be used for positive activities.
