New Chairs and Tables for Our Temporary Schools

#LombokBangkitKembali - Andang (11 yo) never thought that the earthquake that occurred in Lombok in July 2018 then made the buildings in his school totally collapse. Two school buildings consisting of six classes have been crushed into rubble.

"When the earthquake struck, my family and I ran out of the house and evacuate in the area of ??the cemetery. Then a few days after the earthquake I came to school to see the school, it turned out that my school was destroyed. I am very sad," said Andang.

Nurdin, the principal of Andang’ school, confirmed this. According to him, after the massive earthquake that took place in Sambelia, children had to be placed in emergency tents in order to continue to be able to play and learn together at school.

The ineffective learning conditions at Nurdin's school were apparently seen by Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) emergency response team in Lombok. Through cooperation with the East Lombok Regency official, WVI decided to provide three class units of assistance to Nurdin's school.

"At that time we were immediately offered as many as three local emergency class buildings, given donation for chairs and tables, because there were six classes whose chairs and tables were damaged," Nurdin describes the condition.

The temporary classrooms given by WVI are also equipped with chairs and tables. In total, WVI provided 160 pairs of chairs and tables for this school. The two classrooms given by WVI are now used as learning classes for children in grades 4 and 5. While one other class is used as a UKS (health center) room for children who want to rest when they are sick.

"We are always grateful because this assistance is very useful for us. Even though it is only a temporary class, activities can be fulfilled with the provision of a bench table," says the father of five children.

Nurdin’ school is only 1 out of 20 schools that have also received tables and chairs assistance from WVI. Not only providing schools in East Lombok Regency, but WVI also distributes similar items to schools in North Lombok District. The distribution process that has been carried out since July 2019 will continue until September 2019.

Not only getting assistance in the form of classrooms and all of its contents, according to Nurdin, but WVI also helped a number of teachers at his school to get training in psychosocial support and the Safe School simulation. With the training, teachers then can train students to be able to protect themselves in the event of a disaster at school.

Andang also became one of the students who got the Disaster Safe School simulation. Now, after being taught for five consecutive days at school, he understands the best way of protecting himself during a disaster.

"The teacher once taught that if an earthquake we should take shelter under a table or under the door frame and keep calm, don't stress or panic," Andang tells.

At present, after giving dissemination of knowledge of Safe School in East Lombok Regency, WVI continues to run this program to 15 schools in North Lombok Regency. The Safe School Program will continue until 2020.
