Happy in Library

Wahana Visi Indonesia Area Program Biak at Papua collaborated with PT. SMI (Sarana Multi Infrastruktur) to create a child-friendly library in five schools of Papua. This library is made for children with a contribution of several parties, especially children.

Children were involved in giving ideas to make the library more comfort for children. Parents also participated in coloring the room’s wall. They were contributed to making a library decoration, managing book and table position, etc.

To make sure the library will be running well in the future, Wahana Visi Indonesia also gives dissemination to manage the library for teachers and headmaster. About ten teachers participated in dissemination. They learn how to make everything neat and organized.

“We are really excited for this dissemination. Honestly, since I was being a teacher and headmaster, no one made the dissemination for managing library at school. However, most of the school in Biak already have the library, but no one responsible to manage that,” said Kain Wamaes about the current, headmaster of YPK Waupnor Elementary School and a participant of dissemination.

Supporting the whole process, WVI also did a survey in several assisted school at Biak. The results showed about 31,7 percent of children have lack reading ability. It is relevant with the result of Most Littered Nation in The World 2016 research that said Indonesia was in the 60th of 61 countries which have a lack of reading interest.

Based on the situation, WVI and Education Ministry of Biak made a Memorandum of Agreement. The agreement mentioned several deals about library monitoring.

Tineke R Mansnembra, head of Education Ministry of Biak supported the child-friendly library to make Biak’s children full of spirit.

“The books in schools library should be used properly, and schools should take special time to make children enjoy the library. Although we have no librarian yet, I think the teachers should take care of this during the time,” said Tineke.

Stefani as a beneficiary of the library also shows her excitement about a new library in her school.

“Thank you for everyone who makes this real. My friends and I really love this library,” she claimed.
