WVI and Habitat for Humanity Collaboration for Safe Shelters

Remember the tropical cyclone Seroja that occurred in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province in 2021? Heavy rainfall that occurred for 4 days in early April 2021 resulted in heavy flooding and landslides in several sub-districts in NTT Province. As of April 7, 2021, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that 128 people died, 129 people were injured, and 13,230 people were evacuated. The disaster has damaged 1,962 houses, 87 public facilities, and 5 bridges.

One of the causes of disasters is the people's unpreparedness for the worst possibility that may occur, including the availability of disaster-safe shelter. To prevent adverse impacts on disasters that may occur in the future, Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) supported by Habitat for Humanity collaborated to improve access and facilities for children in a safer environment.

The priority of assistance is also carried out in the areas most affected by the tropical cyclone Seroja, namely in Oeaso Village and Naibonat Village. In these two villages, there will be 100 families who will receive assistance in the form of disaster-safe shelters based on criteria agreed between the government, WVI and also Habitat for Humanity.

With the help of disaster-safe shelters provided through this program, the children and families have access to adequate housing and are exposed to knowledge about child protection and rights. In addition, the community and families obtain new skills about carpentry, gain knowledge of household waste management and also clean and healthy living behavior. In a larger scope, the Kupang Regency Government can gain insight into the concept of a disaster-safe shelters and recommendations for the development of the disaster response that has been completed.
