Psychosocial Support for Teachers and Children

Only a few routine activities can be carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic. Gian (5) is one of those kids who does not do that routine. He has not joined the Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) activities for a long time.

Gian is a kindergarten student accompanied by the WVI Melawi Sintang Program Area. One day, in December 2020, Gian returned to his activities with his teachers in the Early Psychosocial Support for Teachers and Children.

The activity helps teachers recognize the character of their students and teaches students to do better. Gian is one of the children who has benefited from this program.

Gian is a shy kid, but he is careful in doing things. Activities carried out by Gian and his friends that day were coloring various illustrations related to Covid-19. Every time he makes a mistake in doing something, Gian often feels like he failed in the coloring activity. For example, when the colored pencil he uses goes out of line, Gian will report it to the teacher and look disappointed.

Gian's teacher is slowly teaching Gian to be a brave child and not easily disappointed or shy. The approach that WVI has taught to the teachers is slowly starting to be applied by the teachers to Gian.

Anastasia Yulianti, the teacher, explained that the psychosocial training she got helped her know her students better.

"After participating in the psychosocial training, I became more aware of the type or character of children, including shy children like Gian. I also become more creative in making activities with children," said Anastasia.

On that day, Gian and his friends seemed happy and enjoyed the activity they had not done for a long time.

“Gian likes to do coloring. Would you do something like this again?” said Gian to his teacher.
