Zurich Helps People Affected by Mount Semeru Eruption
The unexpected natural disaster came again at the end of 2021. Mount Semeru, located in East Java, erupted on December 4, 2021, affecting communities living in Lumajang Regency and Malang Regency. According to data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on December 7, 2021, 34 people died due to sudden hot clouds. 69 people were seriously injured and 100 people were slightly injured. As many as 4,250 people have been evacuated to the safer areas. Also, around 2,970 houses and 24 school buildings were damaged by the eruption.
As a form of commitment to the disaster response, Zurich strives to continue to provide benefit and protection to the people of Indonesia, especially people affected by natural disasters. For this reason, to cope with natural disasters caused by the eruption of Mount Semeru, Zurich Indonesia in collaboration with Wahana Visi Indonesia (WVI) helps the affected community through various efforts, including supporting the activities of the Child-Friendly Space, distributing children kits for under-two years old children (baduta), distributing school kit and also build a handwashing station for children. All activities were carried out in various villages in Lumajang Regency assisted by Wahana Visi Indonesia during the response.
One of the affected people of Mount Semeru eruption who is also a baduta mother, Lufiana, is pleased with the assistance received.
“Thank you Zurich and WVI for the assistance in the form of a children kit for my child. It is very useful,” she said.
Through this assistance, Zurich Indonesia hopes that the community, especially children affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru, can recover and continue their lives after the emergency situation ends.
